Cycling Limassol > Larnaka (and back)

Posted on December 03, 2011

Most long ride for me after one day trip of Limassol – Agros – Limassol (probably 100km or more). Now in the “winter” i tried another interesting route near the sea shore. Larnaca was a new city for me to visit. So i booked some hotel for overnight stay and hit the road.

After 15 minutes ride in home town i broke front tyre :) Repairing it i pulled shoulder, heh :) No way, i don’t want to give up. Go back to the road. 15 minutes later Limassol was on the back. After 36 km first stop in Zigi village that i have been some time ago. Lovely place. Got some food for a breakfast.

Trying always filled backpack with some chocolate for a road. It refresh sugar level in the blood quickly. Then it was a long way on straight road with lovely farmers fields across both side of the road. And big villas here and there. Amazing how people live in complete isolation of many kilometers to nearest kiosk / shop or village. My attention was grabbed by road sign on a junction with village named “Kiti”. Decided to turn there. And special attention was wind power plant that was in some ~10km distance from me. Kiti turnes out a big city and i lost in small streets packed with villas and apartments blocks. What amazing not only cities have cycling roads, but it was cycling roads between villages. And sometime i ride on road for farmers vehicles. Special pleasure to ride them – you can put music to headphones and bust speed with powerful rock.

I got up to wind farm. Even touched wind turbine. It so high and huge. You can’t tell how big is it unless you come close enough. There was 12.5 Mega watt of energy by google maps info. And i have seen big solar electricity farm there too. After that i go on the way to Larnaca, that i have seen from wind farm altitude. Even got to Larnaca airport on my way :)

On the left side of the “airport – Larnaca” road was salt lake where famous pink flamingo hang out. I sow just one on that day. But i sow it :) Larnaca amazing city. Compared to Limassol and Nicosia. Its a little bit more like Nicosia, but small one. Limassol downtown (if the any place can be called that way) looks less developed. Someone point EasyHotel wrong on the map. So it took me 30 minutes to search for it on wrong road, than find free WiFi to check right address and got there by GPS. On off-season prices nice. Spent 22 euro for a night. I think thats not much at all. At least i don’t have electricity bill for hot shower and air-con as at home.

What to do in Larnaca. I don’t know why people comming there, but i came because of japanese sushi. There was one cafe that have them. And make it right. Three japanese cookers that makes awesome food. There was all – different salads, sushi, rolls, sashimi, soba, pastas, rice, damplings, meat dishes, etc. Most amazing you can eat it all, no limited, for 15 euro. Consume three plates before stop :) Sea promenade packed with cafes and pubs.

On my way home i stopped in Zigi village to visit fish tavern. Have never eat grilled fish before. Why not give it a try. So after short questioning for suggestion ended up with whole table of food :) Fish pastas, bread, grilled fish with lemon, french potatoes, some salad and cyprus coffee of course. As i always do, i try to eat at place where locals do. And away from tourists traps. How to find such place. In Zigi most tourist that comes on tours will be limited to go with a group to taverns in city center. Tourist with a car maybe looking for some special service or spectacular view. So i just searched for one away from city center, deeper inside village, and one that have cheap table covers :) Its not because of the price. In mine experience here, the lower the price the better food taste like. If compared low and middle range its true 90% of the time. In spacious place people buy time in nice atmosphere rather than food itself.

Ok, im so tired after 170 km on the road in two days. But i can’t regret it. Budget – 70-80 euro. Memories – priceless.
